ABSTRACT

Nuclear waste management and repository siting are, as noted in the preceding chapters, complex, multifaceted phenomena involving dimensions that become inextricably interrelated in the public mind and in public debate. It is, in fact, the interrelationships and interactions between the numerous dimensions of the problem that will likely determine the course of action finally pursued in addressing the nuclear waste problem (Cluett et al., 1979). Although it is impossible to describe all of the complex intricacies that make up the image and issues surrounding nuclear waste management and repository siting, it is essential at this point to also provide some indication of the interrelations among key dimensions, and of the characteristics of the total context in which nuclear waste management and repository siting issues must be addressed.
