In the early 1960's, my climbing partner, Fred Pfahler, told me about watching Gill perform in the Wyoming Tetons. Fred's eyes bulged and lips rolled. I listened but was a skeptic, naturally. If I couldn't see those routes, then they were already out of mind, and so was Gill. Yet, I was amused by Fred's exaggerations, and they took effect. My thoughts produced an agile climber hugging overhangs and pinching pebbles.
