ABSTRACT
What are the political consequences of East-West trade and technology transfer? Have expanded economic relations improved political relations between East and West? Have expanded commercial arrangements produced what Henry Kissinger called the "web of constructive relationships" that was to militate against Soviet aggression abroad and repression at home? Or have expanded trade and technology transfer made the Western countries more dependent on the East and therefore more reluctant to confront Soviet challenges in world affairs?
