ABSTRACT
The way in which we think about the historic relationship between farming and rural communities is now undergoing qualitative changes. Old assumptions of the dependency of rural places on agriculture are giving way to more complex explanations. This chapter examines those studies that have opened the way to the rethinking of community and farming.
