ABSTRACT
Among the former Soviet republics, Kazakhstan, at almost three million square kilometers, is second only to the Russian Federation in territorial extent. Indeed, Kazakhstan is now the ninth largest nation on earth in land area. It is also one of the most sparsely populated (Appendix 16.1).
