ABSTRACT
China's post-Mao reforms have received considerable international applause recently. Just as Maoism was once heralded as an alternative route to modernity—distinct from industrialization of either the western or the Soviet type—so today Deng Xiaoping's unique brand of "market socialism" is already being hailed by outside observers as a welcome new development strategy for Third World nations.
