The opportunity to review, even briefly, some of the origins of NATO is one to be welcomed. It is always of importance not to lose our history, and this need applies strongly to the history of the last forty years—in particular, to the founding and early development of NATO. The reasons that brought the Alliance into being at that time still have relevance and weight today. In these few pages it is possible, of course, to tell only fragments of the story. But it was in some ways a magic moment and worth recalling.
