ABSTRACT
In this chapter, Pat Sullivan tells the inquiry story of how a spontaneous comment from one of the young children at her childcare provided the impetus for a powerful nature inquiry project. The jointly constructed inquiry focused on the crows that visit the backyard of Pat’s childcare, which is adjacent to a large, beautiful park in San Francisco. Through the course of their shared nature inquiry about crows, the children and teachers researched and explored the colors of animals, and especially birds, and brainstorm their favorite colors. Pat uses this nature inquiry journey to challenge us as educators and as individuals to confront color bias, color hierarchies, and racism in society, childhood, and early childhood education.
