ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Gita Jayewardene describes how she guides her young 3- and 4-year-old students, as well as her own teaching colleagues, to overcome their fears and lack of experience with nature. Gita draws on her extensive personal and professional experiences with nature to offer a range of ideas and strategies for helping young children and other adults begin to embark on nature study. She also employs a range of inquiry strategies to observe and understand how her students create their own theories of the natural world based on their own interests and observations.
