ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Marty Gravett describes the way in which she and a small group of children initially came to know the forest area around their preschool, an area that had been previously ignored despite its close proximity. She explains the intentional steps that she and other teachers took to make the forest more literally visible and more salient in the children’s daily activities. As a result of these invitations to notice, an investigation unfolds that leads into the forest and results in an exploration of mapping and how it represents location and importance.
