ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Anna Golden describes the ways in which preschoolers both explore and make meaning of “the forest,” a wild space adjacent to their school. She looks particularly at the ways that children represented their experiences with and understanding of this natural space, using diverse media including drawing, sculpture, and photography. Her account examines the ways that children use reflection, pretend play, conversation, and ongoing documentation to make sense of and determine their place in the forest. She also reflects on her role as the school’s atelierista in documenting and sometimes guiding the children’s investigations.
