The creation of the Intercultural Universities (UUII) in Mexico is result of complicated historical processes the country has lived since the time of the Spanish conquest. In turn, the story for the creation of each one of the institutions has not been simple. Governmental dynamics at national, state, and municipal levels have resulted in institutions that, as a whole, are different despite the attempts to homogenize their objectives. The task of educating or not educating Indians, and how they should be educated, has brought questions that continue to this day.
