ABSTRACT
One of the earliest ethnographic studies of teachers was Howard Becker's celebrated analysis of the careers of Chicago public schoolteachers in the 1950s. In this article, Becker examines how Chicago schoolteachers differentiate their pupils on social class lines according to how far these pupils diverge from the teacher's model of the ideal pupil.
