Australian Museums Online (AMOL) (https://amol.org.au) was an Australian State and Federal Government funded portal that established a reputation, both nationally and internationally, as a highly popular, innovative gateway to Australian museums and galleries. Initially proposed by the Heritage Collection Council (HCC) in 1995 as an electronic register of moveable cultural heritage material, the AMOL project kept pace with changing public and professional needs through a series of redesigns and the development of a diverse range of content and services. In 2005 the AMOL project turned ten, and for seven of these years the Powerhouse Museum has been the project’s host. During this time a mix of information products, specially created for both museum workers and the public, gave the site a wonderful eclecticism that set it apart from other metacentres, with contact details of over 1300 Australian museums, sitting alongside half a million item level collection records, discussion forums, an online journal as well as a number of database cultural tourist projects and natural science databases.
