ABSTRACT

This manual presents a Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) scoring system for clinical practice and research that integrates features from a psychocultural scoring system developed by George A. De Vos (De Vos & De Vos, 2004) within the field of psychological anthropology and approaches from contemporary theories of human motivation and interpersonal behavior developed within the fields of personality and clinical psychology. The scoring system analyzes TAT narratives within a framework of ten thematic concerns broadly classified as related to agency or communion (Bakan, 1966; McAdams, 1996). The agency-related themes are mastery, achievement, power, competition, and responsibility. The communion-related themes are esteem, nurturance, affiliation, harmony, and solidarity.
