ABSTRACT

The stimuli used were TAT cards 2, 6BM, 7GF, 7BM, and 10 and a scene from the MAPS constructed for this instrument. The MAPS scene was composed of a backdrop of a living room with an open door and three figures standing in front: a brash young man gesturing furtively outside stands between an older man with his hands in his pockets and an older woman with one hand to her face. Thus, the MAPS scene consisted of three dyads with two sides each so that there are six scorable dyadic units: older man-woman, woman-older man, younger man-woman, woman-younger man, younger man-older man, and older man-younger man. Card 2 of the TAT also has three figures, resulting in six scorable dyads: man-woman, woman-man, man-girl, girl-man, woman-girl, and girl-woman. Cards 6BM, 7GF, 7BM, and 10, having only two figures each, consist of two scorable units each as follows:

6BM: Man-woman, woman-man

7GF: Woman-girl, girl-woman

7BM: Older man-younger man, younger man-older man

10: Man-woman, woman-man

In all, there are a minimum of 20 scorable dyads for each subject, each of which is scored on each symbiosis component variable. As there are nine variables, each protocol has at least 180 possible scores, each of which is marked 1 for present or 0 for absent. There can be more than 20 scoreable dyads if the subject introduces dyads into the story, such as including a male figure on card 7GF or a woman on card 7BM. If such dyads are introduced, they are scored like any other dyad.
