ABSTRACT

The Manual for a Scoring Scheme for Verbal Projective Techniques (Fine, 1955b) includes the following major scoring categories: (1) feelings; (2) outcome; and (3) interpersonal relationships. Thirty-six categories of feelings that reflect those “most frequently encountered on the TAT” (Fine 1955a, p. 306) are tallied as present (versus absent) if they are expressed by any character in a story. Repetition is ignored; thus, a feeling is scored as present regardless of the number of times it is articulated in a given story. Analogously, no attention is given to which characters express the feeling. To ensure that no affects are omitted, a special states category is included to allow for any feelings not incorporated elsewhere in the system. Outcome is categorized as favorable, unfavorable, or indeterminate, and each story is summarized by a single outcome based on its conclusion from the point of view of the hero. Interpersonal relationships are classified according to type of interpersonal combination and primary type of interaction. With respect to the former, 16 dyadic groupings are listed; the latter are organized under the broad headings of moving toward, moving against, and moving away from (see Table 14.1).
