ABSTRACT

Either standard or Personal Problem-Solving System-Revised (PPSS-R) instructions can be employed. Standard instructions are listed in the original Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) Manual (Murray, l943, p. 3). Unpublished data from our lab revealed that altering the instructional set did not influence PPSS-R scores but did result in TAT responses that were rated as easier to score. The suggested PPSS-R instructions are listed as follows:

TAT cards are most often individually administered, with the verbal responses recorded and subsequently coded. Some of our research has used group administration of the TAT cards. That is, TAT cards were administered to small groups of participants using a slide projector and a standard white screen. Participants were typically allowed about 10 minutes to compose a written response to each card. Both group and individual administrations have resulted in similar scores.
