ABSTRACT
Globalization is everywhere; Google reveals in excess of 27 million references in the blink of an eye. Politicians and journalists are especially keen on the term, not least because it lends their views a sense of importance and intellectual weight. By invoking “globalization” they sound profound (as if they have a deep understanding of epochal shifts) plus they can present their chosen political ideology as if it were a necessary, even unavoidable path of survival. An additional attraction is that the term is so fl exible that it can be applied to numerous different agendas.
