ABSTRACT
This chapter offers ways of talking about grammar through a functional linguistics approach that enables instructors and students to analyze a text and consider alternative language choices a writer could make to further develop and strengthen it. It presents a grammatical framework that supports talk about language at the level of the clause, sentence, and text in ways that stimulate discussion about meaning and help students recognize the resources available to them in the systems of English grammar for strengthening their academic writing.
