ABSTRACT
Climate is critical to the world we know. The landscape, and the plants and animals in it, are all largely determined by climate acting over long intervals of time. Over geological time, climate has helped to shape mountains, build up the soil, determine the nature of the rivers, and make fl ood plains and deltas. At least until the advent of irrigation and industrialisation, climate determined food supplies and where human beings could live.
