ABSTRACT

A significant body of research suggests that students of color from Spanish-speaking homes are all-too-often pathologized as “students at risk” and experience alarmingly high drop-out rates, low test scores, disproportionate referrals to special education, and minimal university enrollment. At Bienvenidos Academy, however, students are viewed with a different set of lenses that considers their bilingualism, biliteracy, and other funds of knowledge to be important resources that benefit the students, the educators who work with them, and the community at large.
