ABSTRACT

Schools and schooling are understood in sociocultural contexts, and increasingly these understandings are mediated by popular culture, which is an integral part of these contexts. We understand schooling based on our experiences, our children’s experiences, news reports, political debates, etc., but all of these perceptions are filtered through and reinterpreted via our popular culture consumption. Social foundations research on popular culture and schooling has historically been dominated by studies on the portrayal and consumption of images of school and schooling.
