ABSTRACT

Critical criminology directs attention to how states promote women’s illegal behavior, reduce their resources, and lead to their designation and often harsh treatment as “criminal.” Feminist critical criminology emphasizes that, despite oppressions embodied in gender inequality, women exercise agency through various resistance and survival strategies. Feminist critical criminology further clarifies that not just gender – but also its intersection with national origin, immigration status, race, and ethnicity – profoundly affect women’s prosperity and treatment by agents of the state, notably the justice system.
