ABSTRACT

Maria was born in 1987 in São Paulo, Brazil. Interviewed in 2002, she shared with us many stories about her daily life as a young woman living with HIV in a foster care home, where she has been since her mother died of AIDS. Paulo, who had been born two years before and found out he was HIV positive when he was aged 15, when asked about plans for his future, said:

I think I am the first person that just doesn’t care . . . I will be happy anyway. One day I will be a father, having children is essential!
