ABSTRACT

Human remains found in Australia range from Pleistocene Aboriginals to Europeans dating from 1788, to a mix of ancestries today. In recent times, the remains of Australians missing-in-action from wars offshore are also being recovered. The term ‘indigenous’ is used here interchangeably with the term ‘Aboriginal’, but strictly speaking

it refers to both Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, as both are indigenous to Australia. The history of physical anthropology in Australia falls into four phases.
