Ms. Garrison teaches a block course of English and social studies for sixth graders in a middle school serving a diverse, largely working-and middleclass community in a moderate-size city. One fall, while thinking about how to approach the required Central American unit of study, Ms. Garrison noticed an article in the local newspaper about Jennifer Harbury, a Harvardtrained lawyer who for some years worked to assist immigrants from Central America, including refugees from the Guatemalan civil war.
