ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the establishment of second language (L2) teacher education and teacher development as a field of inquiry, namely, the issues that the field has been grappling with, the recent trends, and the questions that researchers have yet to address. The term L2 is used in this chapter to refer to English as a second, foreign, or additional language in multilingual contexts. Studies are reviewed in relation to research in the fields of applied linguistics and teacher learning within the general education literature.
