ABSTRACT
The global spread of English has affected all domains of human activity from language in education to international relations. As a result, it is crucial to understand the role that English plays, the status that it has and the purposes it serves in different contexts-contexts that are different from where the language originated and assumed its present form or where the language spread and became the primary language of the majority population.
