ABSTRACT
Compared with the rest of Latin America, the trade union movement in Argentina has traditionally been strong. Moreover, Peronism, a populist political movement based on the urban masses, has been a major force in the political life of the country for almost four decades. There is, therefore, great significance in an attempt to establish the factors which conditioned the formation of the proletariat in Argentina and shaped its political aspirations and expression.
