ABSTRACT
It may seem odd to begin this Introduction with a confession of uncertainty. Nonetheless, it is as well to acknowledge at the outset that proletarianisation in the Third World is not a clearly-defined and unambiguous phenomenon. Essentially this book is concerned with the emergence of a free wage-labour force in a range of low-income countries.
