Developing Mental Health Programmes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

This chapter begins with a discussion of the context of low-and middle-income countries (LMIC), including health systems and their relevance to mental health programming. The chapter then outlines key steps to take in developing a mental health programme and concludes with a discussion of gender, HIV and AIDS, children’s mental health, and conflicts. Uganda is used as a case study quite frequently throughout the chapter, simply because that is where the author has most experience.
