ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses maternal and newborn mortality as key population health issues for the twenty-first century. The challenges and contentions illustrate major themes in global public health: measuring and addressing socio-economic inequalities, the balance between top-down and bottom-up approaches, the need for better data, and the importance of monitoring.
