ABSTRACT

Water is a foundational resource for development and is essential for sustaining life. The world’s population must have adequate supply to survive and thrive. The human body relies on a consistent supply of water to function; equally important is human beings’ need for water to grow food and support adequate nutrition. Approximately 80 per cent of water use worldwide is for agriculture, and although there are opportunities to conserve water in this sector and transfer it for higher-value uses (such as drinking water), the absolute demand from agriculture is projected to increase, a fact of critical importance for the world’s future food supply.
