ABSTRACT
According to the 2004 Beginning Postsecondary Students Study, 11% of college students in the United States come from Linguistic Minority (LM) backgrounds, in that they report not having spoken English as the fi rst language in their home (U.S. Department of Education, 2007). Yet, limited research to date has explored who these students are and where they are enrolled in college (Kanno & Cromley, 2010; Rodriguez & Cruz, 2009). This chapter provides a demographic profi le of LM college students, analyzes the factors associated with their enrollment in diff erent higher education institution types, and provides a comparative perspective about LM and non-LM students in terms of their characteristics when they enter college.
