ABSTRACT

The role played by culture in creativity has become increasingly recognised around the world (European Commission, 2009). However, traditional Confucian thinking continues to exert a strong influence on the culture, ethics, politics, religion and philosophy of many East and SouthEast Asia countries (Ee and Tan, 2008), including their businesses and organisations (Wang et al., 2005). These countries have scored low on the Individualism Index: Hong Kong (25); Singapore, China and Vietnam (20); Korea (18); and Taiwan (17) (Nguyen et al., 2006: 9). This chapter examines some of the misconceptions about Chinese creativity against the backdrop of Confucian thinking and related cultural traditions.
