ABSTRACT
In 2008, a memorial was dedicated to thousands of migrants who had died or gone missing at sea trying to reach Italy; the deaths were ‘often without burial and therefore without pity’. The memorial is built on the island of Lampedusa, in the shape of a door facing the sea, and represents the gateway to Europe. It commemorates the women, men and children who lost their lives ‘in search of a better life’.1
