ABSTRACT

Each culture has complex and unique counseling needs. Hence, scholars and practitioners acknowledge the need for culturally relevant counseling theories and practices. This chapter discusses the counseling needs of new immigrant students (NISs)—also called Chinese immigrant students, new arrival students, cross-border students, and international students-in Hong Kong. Unquestionably, NISs share much of the same cultural ancestry with their Chinese counterparts in Hong Kong; however, they also have distinct needs. From these needs, tensions and confl icts often arise, and issues of identity, culture, language, and sense of belongingness have become major counseling concerns.
