ABSTRACT
This section focuses on debates over the definition and characterization of "force" and "motion" in the analysis of causation in early modern natural philosophy. Much work in HOPOS focuses on the development and interaction of the major early modern systems of "natural philosophy." Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century natural philosophy is not the same as what, from the nineteenth century on, would be referred to with the term "science."
