ABSTRACT

In educational and psychological testing, validity is often referred to as the most important criterion in evaluating the quality and appropriateness of a test. Its importance is inherent in the definition of validity provided by the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, an authoritative publication produced by a joint committee from the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME; AERA, APA, & NCME, 2014). The Standards define validity as “the degree to which evidence and theory support the interpretations of test scores for proposed uses of tests,” and they claim validity is “the most fundamental consideration in developing tests and evaluating tests” (p. 11).
