ABSTRACT

It is now widely recognized that the effects of information technology are not preordained. They depend on more than the technical capabilities of computers and microelectronics. Organizations have room for choice in the way in which work is organized and jobs are structured around technology. Although the employment consequences will depend primarily on the goals and values of management, there are clear opportunities for union mediation. The choices that are made about the use of technology and the reorganization of the labour process can be affected by the intervention of workers and their representatives in the decision-making processes of the organization.
