ABSTRACT

Because I always knew I’d be a doctor and assumed my role-model father shared that view. Imagine how shocked I was when he exploded upon hearing (for what couldn’t possibly have been the first time) that I would be pre-med in college. “Medicine is no career for a woman!” he bellowed. “You should be a teacher like your mother and then you could be home for your children in the afternoon and summers, etc.”. I was devastated! No, he was never grooming me for a career as a doctor, he protested. He took me to his office and on house calls because he enjoyed my company, etc., etc. For me, despite the disappointment, there was no turning back.
