Gender equality, women’s empowerment and the UN: what is it all about?

Introduction This chapter attempts to provide readers with an insider’s view of some of the social and political complexities that both promote and impede work on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the United Nations (UN) system. It also shows how some of these factors were involved in the setting up in 2011 of UN Women, the new UN gender organization.
