ABSTRACT

The primary thrust of this chapter is an examination of how the western social-welfare system and other social-welfare-related institutions (that is, education, religion and health) have impacted upon the positive growth and development of the traditional social-welfare practices of the Temne indigenous population. This chapter will: (1) present an historical overview and sub-ethnic breakdown of the Temne; (2) discuss impacts of other ethnic groups on the Temne institutions such as the institutionalization of the Temne culture and traditional social-welfare systems; (3) examine the impact of the non-traditional social-welfare system on the Temne; and (4) discuss intervention strategies necessary for a systemic relationship with other social institutions and indigenous groups.
