Survey data from local education authorities (LEAs), primary and secondary schools will be used to examine the role played by Local Government Education Departments in supporting school initiatives for gender equality over the last decade. It will reveal a mixed picture for Wales. In-depth case study material is then used to explore the interconnection between central government policy and local context by considering the experiences of one local education authority in Wales. Data from a variety of local contexts and settings reveal the ways changing national policies and reforms are mediated. The qualitative case study undertaken in an urban LEA in South Wales enabled a detailed picture of how equality and gender issues were being tackled within schools and at LEA level.
