ABSTRACT

Since the early 1990s Event Management modules have ballooned in proportion, to become a major element in Leisure and Recreation education. To be sure, lately they have developed their own degree programmes, publication outlets and research networks. These courses of study now enrol many students who, twenty years ago, would have opted for Leisure and Recreation Studies. The development in the curriculum represents more than a change in tone and emphasis. Event Management purports to be a new area of study, hot-wired to popular culture, eective revenue generation and the needs of the digital age. It would be going too far to propose that Event Management is the future, and Leisure and Recreation Studies is the past. The latter eld is too well established, with strong employment pathways to public leisure and recreation departments and private providers, to wither away.
