ABSTRACT

This chapter takes stock of the involvement with the Games of providers other than national governing bodies of sport (NGBs). It starts with the regional context of London sport and such details as are available on regional participation, and then looks successively at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), Sport England (national), Greater London Authority (GLA)/Mayor of London and the host Olympic boroughs’ programmes, before making some concluding remarks. The coalition government (Conservative-Liberal Democrat) declared a focus on four areas for Olympic legacy (DCMS, 2010a):

1 Harnessing the United Kingdom’s passion for sport to increase grassroots participation, particularly by young people – and to encourage the whole population to be more physically active, including £65 million (DfE) for schools to release a PE teacher to organise competitive sports, £10 million (Lottery via Youth Sport Trust) for the new Schools Games, £14 million for development in primary schools (DoH), £130 million for Places People Play – see below – and £8 million for disability sport (Sport England).
