ABSTRACT

The African continent is a region of the world where the biological and cultural diversity is matched by a varied array of approaches taken to environmental governance. This chapter examines African membership of key international environmental treaties, as well as trends in national approaches to address environmental issues, for example through commitments given to environmental protection in national constitutions. It also explores and analyses the particular challenges to implementation in this region of the world, including civil unrest and poaching, and considers the initiatives that have been taken and those that remain for the future.
