ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and evaluates regional environmental law in the Americas, canvassing the unique approaches that the region has taken to address environmental protection and sustainable development. It explores regional environmental and sustainable development law and policy, examines the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Forum on Environmental Law, as well as cooperation through sub-regional institutions. It also includes reference to trade agreements that contain important commitments on sustainable development, relevant provisions of investment treaties, and environment and sustainable development aspects of the inter-American human rights system. It concludes with the challenges and opportunities to strengthen environmental management and sustainable development in the Americas.
