ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to illustrate the development of the environmental law of the European Union (EU) through policy and legislative developments, with a view to emphasising the unique characteristics of the EU legal framework and their relevance from an international environmental law perspective. The objectives and principles of EU environmental law are then discussed, and some of the present challenges facing EU environmental law are identifi ed.
